A need for organizing postgraduate studies

The agronomy belongs to biotechnical scientific field. As an interdisciplinary science, it covers almost all the natural sciences, but it is also deeply interferedwith the technical and economic research areas.

The scientific staff of the Institute for Agriculture constantly monitors the latest developments in the field of modern agriculture. This scientific institution was established in 1944, which means that it is one of the oldest in the Republic of Macedonia. The Institute for Agriculture, working in dynamic conditions with his team, provides support for the development of Macedonian agriculture.During the 68 years of existence, an educated scientific staff from all the areas of agricultural sciences was created. Parallely with the education of the staff, there were created and developed conditions for scientific research and its implementation in all the areas of agricultural production in the country. The connection between the scientific research and modern ways of education are the key challenges for the future development of the Republic of Macedonia in the field of agriculture, education and economic development.

In the global economy, the quality of food that is produced, the standards, the application of good agricultural practices, agro-processing, warehousing and marketing are the aspects that are extremely important for the agricultural producers, and also for the education in the field of agriculture. Within education and training, all the new trends should be consideredin the educational process and their socio-economic importance. It is also emphasized the significance of the growing concern for protection of the environment and the natural resources as subjects for teaching activities, such as: plant protection and integrated pest management, rational use of fertilizers etc. The participants in the sector must possess modern knowledge and skills to build a modern approach towards sustainable agricultural and rural development.

During the adjustment to modern needs of agriculture, rural development and protection of the environment and during the years of operation and communication with practice, it was identified the need to complement the existing second education cycle in the Institute for Agriculture. The proposed program of studies belongs to the biotechnological scientific area in the field of agricultural sciences. With the existing staff, as well as the staff from the related institutions, it is expected to cover several current areas of crop production and processing.

The second cycle is organized according to the criteria of the Bologna Declaration and includes five significant areas of the agricultural sciences:

• Plant Biotechnology – Enology
• Vegetable production – Integrated production
• Plant Production – Organic Production
• Vegetable production –Nursery Production
• Vegetable production – Seed Production of Agricultural and Horticultural Plants

One-year and two-year programs of Plant Production and Plant Biotechnology under the Bologna Declaration function for several years. In the future, postgraduate studies will be expanded in other ways relevant to the development of the agricultural sciences in the country and the world.

Master studies of the scientific area Plant Production – Integrated and Organic Production
According to Agenda 21 (1992), which states: “Many adjustments are needed in the agricultural, environmental and macroeconomic policy, at national and international level, in both developed and developing countries to create the conditions for sustainable agriculture and rural development”, the main objective of sustainable agriculture and rural development is intensifying the food production in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and food security.

This process implies involvement of the educational institutions, economic initiatives, development of suitable new technologies, providing adequate food, access to it by risk groups, market production, employment and poverty reduction, management of the natural resources and protection of the environment.

The program for Integrated and Organic production arises from the growing need of the wider community as a consumer of safe food. The students, after completing this program, will be prepared to enter into the commercial production of healthy and safe food, or in the supporting activities of this branch. Additionally, there are opportunities for placement of manpower in the field of management of water, soil and natural resources, counseling services, organization of supply chains and continuing the scientific research in specific fields of interest.

By completing the postgraduate studies in this field, candidates acquire the academic title Master of Biotechnical Sciences in the area of Integrated Production, ie Master of Biotechnical sciences in the area of Organic Production.

Master studies of the scientific area Plant Biotechnology – Enology
The wine has a special place in human nutrition and cultural history from ancient times. The special interest in wine comes from its nutritional value, and in the modern world it is accepted as a beverage that contributes to health. Therefore, there was a need for development of the enology as a separate and complex science. Moreover, our country has a rich wine history and excellent climate and soil capacity to produce high quality wines, which should be a major goal of the wine production.

Postgraduate studies in enology are designed on the following principles:

• To satisfy the national and international requirements in order to train staff who will contribute to the modernization of the wine industry in the Republic of Macedonia;

• Application of modern technological processes for the production of quality wines;

• Monitoring of the quality of produced wines using modern analytical methods.

It is planned for the studies to provide multidisciplinary scientific and technical skills that will enable the adaptation to the economic changes in winemaking and successful presentation and marketing in foreign markets.

This area, which is deficient in experts, after graduation will create employment opportunities in wineries in the country and practical application of knowledge obtained during the study.

By completing the postgraduate studies in this field, candidates acquire the academic title Master of Biotechnical Sciences in the area of Enology.

Master studies of the scientific area Plant Production – Nursery Production
The production of quality and healthy seedlings based on the law regulations is a precondition for successful orchard and vineyard production. With its specificity, the nursery production requires highly trained personnel.

The agroecological conditions in the Republic of Macedonia are favorable for the production of quality fruit and grape seedlings. But the lack of domestic production, the uncontrolled import of planting material and the lack of trained staff in the field, requires the need for establishment of such studies, which was not organized by other relevant scientific institutions in the country.

Postgraduate studies for Nursery production are formed to satisfy the national and international requirements and also to train personnel who will contribute to the improvement of the technology for production of planting material and its certification in accordance with EU regulations. This action will affect on the development and modernization of the entire orchard and wine production in the country.

With the completion of their studies, the students will gain knowledge about the application of modern scientific methods and technologies for the commercial production of high quality and healthy seedlings, which are going to be competitive in the domestic and foreign markets. This will enable the creation of independent scientists with vision, creativity and new ideas that will contribute to the improvement of the quality of the existing nurseries, as well as stimulation for creating new nurseries in the country.

By completing the postgraduate studies in this field, candidates acquire the academic title Master of Biotechnical Sciences in the area of Nursery Production.

Master studies of the scientific area Plant Production – Seed Production of Agricultural and Horticultural Plants
The top achievements in the selection of programs are the creation of new varieties and hybrids with better quality properties and also higher contribution. The newly created varieties and hybrids, as one of the main factors in the modernization of agricultural plant production, can develop their genetic potential only through well-organized production of quality seeds. World science and practice show that seed variety is one of the most important factors for increase of the agricultural production.

Seed production as a specific process of maintaining the varieties and reproducing the seeds, consists of series of measures: a choice of surfaces, breeding seed crops, expert control, collecting, processing, storing and testing the quality of seeds, and at the end release and delivery to users for sowing.

The production of seed varieties aims to provide the farmers with sufficient quantities of quality seed from recognized and registered varieties and hybrids of agricultural plants.

The program for Seed production of agricultural and horticultural plants stems from the need for modernization of the agricultural plant production, because the organization of seed production as a complicated process requires theoretical and practical knowledge. The students after the adoption of this program will be prepared to enter into commercial production of high quality seed crops and garden plants.

Seed production area is deficient in experts. After graduation, they will be created trained professionals who can organize and produce quality seed for the agricultural plant production in the country.

By completing the postgraduate studies in this field, candidates acquire the academic title Master of Biotechnical Sciences in the area of Seed Production of Agricultural and Horticultural Plants.

Compatibility of the postgraduate studies with similar institutions in the country and around the world
The Institute for Agriculture, as a member of the University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius”, prepared the postgraduate program in accordance with the relevant undergraduate studies at various universities in the country. In the preparation of these studies, there was an established cooperation with several international institutions in this area, such as: the Institute of Bari (IAMB) – Italy, University of Wageningen – Netherlands, Bioforsk – Norwegian Institute for Plant Genetic Resources from Sadovo, Bulgaria etc.
